Where To Get Fly In Fire Red HM Location And Usage Guide

Navigating the vast Kanto region in Pokémon FireRed can become time-consuming as your adventure expands beyond early routes. Acquiring Hidden Machine 02, commonly known as Fly, unlocks convenient fast travel between previously visited towns and cities.

Finding HM02 Fly on Route 16

To obtain HM02, head to Celadon City and take the western exit leading toward Route 16. Before reaching the sleeping Snorlax blocking the main road, locate the small cuttable tree along the northern fence line. Use a Pokémon equipped with the Cut technique to clear the obstacle and reveal a hidden pathway.

Follow this northern path through the gatehouse until you reach a quiet, secluded house on the other side. Inside, speak with the female NPC who will hand over HM02 Fly to keep her secret location peaceful.

Requirements for Using Fly Outside Battle

Before you can take to the skies for overworld transportation, you must fulfill specific gym badge requirements. Defeating Gym Leader Lt. Surge in Vermilion City grants you the Thunder Badge, which authorizes the out-of-battle use of Fly.

Without the proper gym badge, you can still teach the move to compatible Pokémon for battle purposes, but fast travel remains locked. Ensuring your party includes a Flying-type Pokémon ready to learn this field move keeps your journey moving efficiently.

Strategic Applications in Combat and Travel

In battle, Fly serves as a reliable two-turn Flying-type attack that allows your Pokémon to vanish on the first turn and strike on the second. This semi-invulnerable state offers great tactical advantages during tough encounters against rival trainers.

For overworld navigation, opening your move menu lets you immediately jump to any Pokémon Center you have already registered. This eliminates tedious backtracking through caves and long routes, saving valuable time during end-game exploration.
